MPV source code used to be very compact, now you've started to bundle 5MB worth of compiled MacOS only resources.

Are they absolutely necessary in the source tar.gz?

those are resources (icons, nothing compiled) that are necessary for a macOS App bundle to fully work. without them mpv can't be build for macOS or properly bundled.
