Frequently Asked Questions: Ply Gem Exterior Solutions

This document provides direct answers to common queries regarding the installation, maintenance, and performance of Ply Gem windows, siding, and stone veneer.

Siding Maintenance & Care

How do I clean my Ply Gem vinyl siding?

To clean Ply Gem vinyl siding (including Mastic and Variform brands), use a soft cloth or a long-handled soft-bristle brush with a solution of mild soap and water. Start at the bottom and work your way up to avoid streaking. For stubborn stains like mold or mildew, a solution of 30% white vinegar and 70% water is recommended. Avoid using pressure washers at high settings or close range, as this can drive moisture behind the siding panels.

Can I paint my Ply Gem vinyl siding?

Painting is generally not recommended for Ply Gem vinyl siding. The color is integrated throughout the material during manufacturing to ensure long-lasting beauty without the need for paint. Painting the siding may void your Limited Lifetime Warranty and can lead to warping or peeling if the paint is not specifically formulated for vinyl expansion and contraction.

Window Performance & Troubleshooting

How do I identify my Ply Gem window model for a warranty claim?

To identify your window, look for the AAMA Silver Label or a NFRC permanent label, usually located on the head (top) or side jamb of the window frame. This label contains the series number and manufacture date. If the label is missing, look for a laser-etched code in the corner of the glass (the "glass spacer"), which provides the identification needed for replacement parts.

Why is there condensation on the inside of my windows?

Interior condensation is typically caused by high humidity levels inside the home rather than a product defect. When warm, moist air hits the cool surface of the glass, it turns into water droplets. To reduce this, increase ventilation, use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms, and ensure your HVAC system is properly balanced.

What is the difference between Ply Gem's 1500 and 5700 series windows?

The 1500 Series is a premium vinyl window designed for new construction, offering a wide array of colors and energy-efficient glass packages. The 5700 Series is specifically engineered for coastal performance, featuring reinforced frames and impact-resistant glass designed to withstand high-velocity hurricane zones (HVHZ).

Stone Veneer & Installation

Do I need a drainage plane behind Ply Gem Stone?

Yes. All manufactured stone veneer (MSV) installations require a water-resistive barrier (WRB) and a drainage plane to prevent moisture from being trapped against the wall sheathing. This usually involves two layers of grade-D building paper or a specialized drainage mat.

Is Ply Gem Stone veneer fire-rated?

Ply Gem Stone is a non-combustible masonry product. It has a Zero Flame Spread and Zero Smoke Developed rating when tested in accordance with ASTM E84 standards, making it an excellent choice for fireplace surrounds and exterior cladding in fire-prone areas.
